I like data, and tracking progress through data. One reoccurring use of data in my life is capturing calories consumed vs active calories in a bid to either lose or maintain weight. As I’ve a few pounds to lose at the moment, I thought I would run a little comparison of some of the available tools, entering the data side by side to see how they compare.

In the past, I’ve stuck to a pretty consistent set of tools, and they have influenced the comparison I’ll be making. The tools which I’ve used the most for this purpose is MyFitnessPal, and so this is the tool I’ll be benchmarking the others against.

The second tool I’ve deiced to compare is Garmin Connect +, which is the “premium” version of Garmin’s fitness platform. I use Garmin wearables and Garmin bike computers and power meters, so it would seem a good idea to try and combine all of my fitness needs into a single subscription.

And the third tool I’ve decided to compare against is FoodVisor, which was recommended by the Apple Play store. I don’t really know much about it, so we’ll see how it compares.

All three tools have Apple iOS apps, which is a pre-requisite, as well as integration with Apple Health. I’m curious to see how Apple Health will cope with all three trying to sync similar data.

So, today is day 1, and I’ll aim to get a comparative review up at the beginning of May.
